OTTOMAN KALYONS ATTENDING THE ÇEŞME WAR

"Cevdet Bahriye Document No. 7197 (13 Za. 1183/10 March 1770). Lists in which caliber and how much ammunition to be carried by the Ottoman ships (ie warships) sent to the Mediterranean for the 1770 campaign year.

When I looked at the numbers given in the document, I thought there might be a confusion between the balls of the Burc-ı Zafer and Hısn-ı Bahri.

Ball distribution according to the document.

Burj-i Zafer (70) - 132ky (2), 44ky (2), 14ky (16), 3ky (50)
Hisn-i Bahri (70) - 132ky (2), 44ky (8), 14ky (18), 7ky (30), 3ky (12)
Ziver-i Bahri (70) 44ky (8), 11ky (20), 7ky (30), 3ky (12)

A logical conclusion can be achieved if the shyka and 14-ounce balls of the two gallions are displaced.

Burj-i Zafer (70) 132ky (2), 44ky (8), 14ky (18), 3ky (42)
Hisn-i Bahri (70) 132ky (2), 44ky (2), 14ky (16), 7ky (38), 3ky (12)
Ziver-i Bahri (70) 44ky (8), 11ky (20), 7ky (30), 3ky (12)

As a result, the gun distribution on ships:

The number in front of the ship's name shows the amount of cannon on that ship, the next figure shows the diameter of the cannon and the amount of cannon in the numbers in brackets after the cannon diameter.

Burj-i Zafer (70) - 132ky (2), 44ky (8), 14ky (18), 3ky (42)
Hisn-i Bahri (70) - 132ky (2), 44ky (2), 14ky (16), 7ky (38), 3ky (12)
Ziver-i Bahri (70) - 44ky (8), 11ky (20), 7ky (30), 3ky (12)
Seyf-i Bahri (62) - 44ky (6), 11ky (20), 5ky (28), 3ky (8)
Neheng-i Bahri (62) - 44ky (6), 9ky (20), 5ky (28), 3ky (8)
Peleng-i Bahri (62) - 44ky (6), 9ky (20), 5ky (28), 3ky (8)
Ikab-i Bahri (62) - 44ky (6), 9ky (20), 5ky (28), 3ky (8)
Mukaddem-i Şeref (54) - 22ky (2), 7ky (22), 5ky (24), 3ky (6)
Berid-i Zafer (54) - 7ky (24), 5ky (24), 3ky (6)
Mesken-i Gazi (52) - 5ky (22), 3ky (24), 1.5ky (6)
Semend-i Bahri (50) - 5ky (22), 3ky (22), 1.5ky (6)
Seyyar-ı Bahri (50) - 5ky (22), 3ky (22), 1.5ky (6)
Talisman-Bahri (42) - 5ky (20), 3ky (16), 1.5ky (6)

Burc-u Zafer was Ottoman flagship of the summer patrol squadron in 1760, was hijacked by the mutinous Maltese captive seamen and Greek deckhands, and brought to Valetta harbour; sparking a very serious diplomatic crisis. An unknown  Maltese artist produced a series of superb drawings of this ship as she lay in Valetta harbour. These are so far the only known reliable visual sources of an Ottoman's 74 guns ship.

Some information I have learned from your pages.

1 kantar caliber (44 okka) barrel 370 mm, cast in the 18th century, weight 4920 kg. (1 cantar guns were produced in different weights at different dates.)
1 pood (possibly 14 okka) barrel 200 mm cast in the 19th century, weight 1475 kg.
24 pound caliber (9 okka) barrel 146 mm Cast in the 19th century, weight 2293 kg.
12 pound caliber (5 okka) barrel 122 mm cast in the 18th century, weight 1300 kg.
9 pound (3 okka) barrel 104 mm, cast in 1770, weight 1586 kg. (possible length: 16 karış: 3,66 m)

The most interesting is 1 weigher cannon. It could be used very effectively with a team of 22 together with its self-propelled weight of 5.5 tons.

One of the three weighbridge cannons is exhibited in front of the Istanbul Beşiktaş ferry port. Technical features of this ball:

3 CANTAR CANNON

Barrel Gate: 52 cm
Barrel Length: 3.89 m
Length of the Gun: 4.36 m
Shot Put Weight: 3 Weighers (169.33 kg)
Probable Weight: Must be more than 160 cantar (around 9000 kg) (Estimated)

Re: Османский флот в 1770 г.

1

Problems of the Ottoman Navy

The sailing fleet gradually entered a period of stagnation after 1718. Naval victories in the battle of Peloponnese also created an extreme sense of confidence in the navy.

In the period between 1718 and 1770, we focused on weighbridge weapons. This was a big mistake. These hard-to-use weapons reduced the number of other lighter weapons on ships. And because of these heavy weapons, especially the lower deck guns had to be placed in very different diameters.

Between 1701 and 1718, the Ottoman navy had vessels designed specifically for produced by Constructors of Dutch and Greek origin. Between 1718 and 1770, the galleon gradually deteriorated its production quality. Galleon width and aspect ratios were produced at bad rates. The main reason for this was that he had to carry very heavy weigh guns. Over time, the weight of Kantar guns also increased.

After the Mora war, the galleon numbers in the navy decreased over time. The production of three tecks was stopped. There were a few galleons larger than 50 Zira. Generally, ships suitable for combating pirates were preferred.

There was no school to train naval officers and soldiers. Navy soldiers were have to learn with master apprentice style. Most ottoman administrators, generals and admirals did not have literacy.

Incidents such as bribery, irregularity, favoritism, selling of positions and duties with money, and ship captains selling ship materials were frequent.

In particular, the weakening of the Venetian navy, the main rival of the Ottomans, caused the number of Ottoman navies to be reduced and turned into only a coastal defense force.

If the Russian navy had enter into conflict with the Ottoman navy in the early 18th century, there was no chance.

So sorry.

Do you have a chance to find the Turkish name of this ship?

Because Russian history records have recorded our ships under very different names. They conveyed intact and unrealistic information about the size of our ships, the number of weapons and the availability of personnel.

Your estimation of the number of soldiers in the Ottoman navy is very realistic.

This is not number of soldiers. I calculated broadside weight all turkish SOL. There is 4 numbers: 1) broadside weight of odinary guns in oke 2) broadside weight of odinary and kantar guns in oke 3) broadside weight of odinary guns in russian artillery pounds 2) broadside weight of odinary and kantar guns in russian artillery pounds.
It is necessary to recount based on your information

About weight of russian cannonballs:
1 artillery pound = 0,4914 kg.
1 pood edinorog have 48 pounds canonball, 1/2 pood edinorog - 24 pounds canonball, for other guns weight of canonball equal to the calibre of the gun.

For example, how many tons does a russian 24 pounder cannon weigh?
