Hello again!

Working on italian translation for the forum i'm into, (taking data from multiple source, mentioning many times your name as the most recent and correct) i've found a pair of events in Black Sea that i would like to understand better:

ш./32.39 в.д. Щ-215
L.1357               =   24.1.1943   45.17 с.ш./32.39 в.д. Щ-215

Searching on data provided here: http://archive.org/search.php?query=sub … C+Naval%22
I've found 2 things:
1) the damage on them was wrote as "insignificant hits" on "tugs and lighter", so there were hits but with very very low consequences. Still could be enaugh to keep them in the list due the fact that hits (even if "insignificant) occurred.
2) the english-translated line speak of "tugs", but this should means that also the tug NETTY received some kind of hits as STRALSUND.

There are other source that mention if the damage was "Insignificant" or "Light" or something else?  Why this document speak of "tugs" rather then "tug"? tug NETTY should be added or not among the list of victories?

Second thing :
On the same source, and it has also been confirmed by igor on some document he have, that:

24 May 1943
Submarine ShCh-215 (same one of the previous entry) launched 4 torpedoes against italian tanker Celano (3741 GRT), missing her.
A torpedo however explode in front of the auxiliary minesweeper R-164, part of the escort, causing light damages due splinters.

This action should not be included among the list of victories? Even if "indirect", the damage actually seems a bit more serious then the one caused on STRALSUND&L.1357 (and NETTY too possibly).  According that english-translation  it's "Light" damage   against "Insignifcant" damage.

Tug Netty was in that convoy, but got no damages. Stralsund claimed as damaged in KTB GeFu Krim - Kaukasus and she was in docyard hands at least by the end of January, 1943. L.1357 claimed as damaged (have a water leak) in KTB STS Sebastopol. She was under repair at least by the end of February. Maay be her damages had seagoing character, may be not.

The name of the tanker was Celeno.
I don't know what kind of damages got R-164, but she didn't stay under repair at all.

Some adds: I found L.1357 stranded at Ak-Mechet on January, 12 and probably had a leak from that ocassion, not due Sch-215 attack (the sub shot with 45-mm gun at MFP, but missed and with 12,7-mm MG at the tug).

Hello again, an interesting event that i think should be dig more.

The often reported victory of submarine L-21 on german submarine U-367 (with mine) is absent from your list and igor explained me that U-367 sent a message when (on 15.3) submarine was already leaving the Danzic Bay. This making impossible for the submarine to be lost in the field laid by L-21

However Polish divers in September had inspected a submarine wreck that was at first reported in December 2001, then again in June 2004 was made available for diving.
The wreck lie at 54º34’00,000” N; 18º52’49,599” E.
Polish divers made video, photos and article page about the identification of the wreck and they conclude that it was U-367. According their article the wreck lie very close to the torpedo boats T-3 and T-5 (actually it's even closer to T-5 rather than the torpedo boat to her sister-ship). They make knowledge about a reasonable mistake made by soviet submarine about the exact location of the mines laid (due bad weather) and that considering the position the submarine was likely sunk by the same mine-field that sunk T-3 and T-5.

During the inspection they found evidence that submarine was of same class and type of U-367 (despite difficulties) and made interesting photo comparisons to prove this.

At this point i would have liked to know how much credits we can now give to this unclear victory for L-21.
It was a mistake that report of day 15.3 out of the Bay of Danzic? (maybe done by another submarine, or maybe a mistake in reporting the coordinate of the call, with submarine that believed to have left behind the Hela peninsula ).
Or if we can be sure that the wreck found can't be U-367, what submarine it could be? And could be related as victim of L-21 field?

To my knowledge, there is none other submarine that could have sunk in that position: this could leave few possibilities:
1) Germans scuttled a submarine in that position and left there the wreck.
2) Soviets scuttled a former german submarine in that position after the war.
3) One of the german submarines lost in war was actually sunk in that location and needs an complete re-thinking of cause of sinking.

However there is also the point that according this Polish inspection, the damage on submarine wreck match with damage caused by mine...
Also checking the position (google earth helps), the position given by Polish (that match with the altered positio of the L-21 field) it's more on the very border of the Gulf of Danzic (being basically in front of the point of the peninsula), maybe the message of 15 was meaning that submarine was on the verge to entere the Gulf? And submarine could have been sunk shortly after the message... (message of 16.3 received by U-3010 could have came from some other source or for some reason, U-367 was delayed in navigation).

Finally we've also to consider among the data  that (if that article is right), the submarine laid 20 mines with intervals of 90 metres (on straight line): this make 1800 metres of lenght.

I don't know what the wreck this is. By Ultra dates U-367 sunk far away from this position. The analyses of Ultra dates could born suspection that Groner handbook's dates regarding fates of some U-boats of training units in the last mounth of war are wrong. I'm not belive that this boat scutled after the war due her combat damages. So this wreck is mystery for myself.

Oh.. well, this is surely but puzzling and mysterious.
Do you think that this (so far not identified) submarine could have been a victim of the L-21 field?
But i'm thinking that if its identity is some other boat, she could have been sunk in any other month/week 1945 , maybe even because of some other group of mines (maybe british dropped some of them after).

At first i was thinking that the submarine commander could have reported of being out the peninsula, in the proper Danzic Bay, if he considered the extreme point of the peninsula as point of passage to assess of being "not yet" or "into" the bay. But if the Ultra dates gives a specific location reported from the uboat (or if the boat said clearly of being well far from the peninsula), this hypothesis fall.

I don't know. I know only, that between March 17 and 19, 1945 Germans sweeped 11 mines from that field, later some new could be added.

So, we could think that U-367 minned and sunk during her return in Danzig bay in night March 15/16. But who in fact sent the false-report "from U-3010" during the following night far away from L-21 field?

The German command and historian thought that this was U-367.

Oh, now i see, thanks..
It's a pity that this seems a mystery hard to be lightened...

Maybe a key element could have been some kind of further report of U-3010: to discover if really happened something to it, or if watched something, or maybe if it got an sos call and the further communication got misinterpreted as something that happened to U-3010 itself,  or of course if the message had nothing to do with it and it was a mistake and the call came from U-367. I notice that the "From" source is also the Front-Line training group, (i suppose) some ground-based station. So here we have a message that could have been originated by a ground observation unit and they could have just hypothesized it was U-3010.

As you can see Ultra intercept not the direct reports from U-boats, but reports from HQ of German training underwater units. There was no explanation about real circumstance on U-3010 in them. They told only that U-3010 didn't make such report.

Hello...

If you're not busy, i've found a bit mysterious event that could have been related to a submarine attack. But maybe you already saw it and found a different explain.
In Black Sea on 3 June 1944, the tug KATJA was released by Turkish government with 566 men.
It's unknown to me who they were (Jews refugee?)
It's said that she was ordered to leave Bosporus on 4 June at dawn, and that it was arranged that she will be met by a submarine-chaser and three minesweepers.
http://archive.org/stream/wardiarygerma … 4/mode/2up

However the next day, 4 June, is recorded that KATJA was sunk "in the Bosporus" on day 3 due an explosion. Crew was rescued and origin of explosion unknown.
http://archive.org/stream/wardiarygerma … 8/mode/2up

Considering that the KTB say it was sunk "In" the Bosporus and it's said to have occurred on day 3 (shortly before the leaving), it should have not been caused by a submarine attack, out of the channel. (but this english translated KTB has proved to have mistakes).

You've some knowledge of this ship? it's origin and if she really sunk in the Bosporus or if she could have been sunk out of the channel (by submarine?).

Considering it should have not be loaded with a dangerous cargo (explosive, ammunitions), and considering that such area could not have been mined, could have been a deliberate sabotage?

Hello!
This is not clear history for me. I found in KTB ASM info that Katja with 66 men was realized by Turkish authorities and about 19.00 June 3rd should be leave Turkish teritorial water. But before this Katja exploded by unknown reason. The certain time and place are unknown also. ASM tought that she fall victim of sabotage. No soviet subs off Bosphorus on that time.

It remains surely an interesting and mysterious event, one of the many in war...

However, re-watching your list i've found a little discrepancy with the dates on town.ural

ш.    16.00 в.д. К-51
ш.    15.05 в.д. К-51

These two entries are correct?
Because i've seen them switched usually: with Sollind sunk on 28 November and Saar sunk on 1 December.

A little detail i noticed recently on uboat.net.
Location of the discovered wreck by Polish  (that could be U-367) it's not too much far from another u-boat wreck: of U-346.
This last one was sunk on 20 September 1943 by training accident, however according uboat.net the wreck is located at 54 37'38"N, 18 50'40"E  or 54 37'29"N, 18 50'26"E.
(according reported diving site).
Previously the location of sinking was reported to have been at 54.25N, 19.50E.
(tha's basically "on ground", or at best on Vistola lagoon).

The new confirmed location is still at a distance of 7 Km and even closer to the shore, comparing with the diving made by the Polish divers.
So we could assume that the mysterious wreck isn't U-346.
http://uboat.net/boats/u346.htm
This leave out what appeared to be a good proposal, as alternative of U-367.

This thing however rise doubt about the actual location reported of submarines lost in the Gulf, if i'm right the full list is this:

U-272  sunk at 54.45N, 18.50E, on 12.Nov.1942. Collision with U-634. There were 19 survivors.
U-738 sunk at  54.31N, 18.33E  on 14.Feb.1944. Collision with ship Erna. 24 Survivors.   (possibly different location:it's basically on shore!)
U-768 sunk at 54.30N, 19.15E on 20.Nov.1943. Collision with U-745. no survivors.
U-222 sunk at 54.25N, 19.30E on 2.Sept.1942. Collision with U-626. no survivors.
U-80 sunk at 54.25N, 19.50E on 28.Nov.1944. Diving accident. no survivors.   (another strange location, but could have been the Lagoon)
U-416 sunk at 54.58N, 19.33E on 12.Dec.1944. Collision with minesweeper M-203. 5 survivors
U-5 sunk at 54.40N, 19.45E on 19.March.1943. Diving accident. 16 survivors.
U-7 sunk at 54.52N, 19.30E on 18.Febr.1944. Diving accident.no survivors
U-1015 sunk at 55.09N, 19.11E on 19.May.1944. Collision with U-1014. 14 survivors.
U-670 sunk on unknown location on 20.Aug.1943. Collision with target ship Bolkoburg. 22 survivors.

However i think it's a bit hard to make them as possible identity for the wreck inspected by polish divers: they were all lost in collision and diving accidents (most of time with survivors), while the wreck had battle damage.

I've attempted to read better the polish article: actually they discuss shortly the problem of U-3010 call. But they make notice about
1) how one first mistake has been surely done (U-3010 instead U-367, they believe it was U-367 to make the call too).
2) if a thing as name-change (a big mistake) was committed (probably due stress/rushed call in despair by the submarine on verge of sinking, with misunderstunding and confusion made both my the radio station and the submarine itself),  making a mistake about the location it's even something of more likely.
Considering that there was a name's mistake, the call could have been not much clear.
And thus no surprise that the location of sinking is different.

Here it's the extract from the polish page:
Pozostała jednak kwestia, że meldunek nadano z innej pozycji, niż wynikało to z powojennych raportów sowieckich dotyczących lokalizacji zagród minowych i rozbieżności w numerze okrętu w meldunku
radiowym.

This point honestly i think make sense, and the detail of name mistakes (and confirmation of no signal sent by U-3010) could even further stress the fact that U-367 signal got poorly understood by the radio station.

You've mentioned the possibility of some submarine lost in the last months whose fate has been wrongly recorded.
I've attempted to make some search on u-boat.net and i've found no other u-boats lost on 1945 in or around the gulf.
(apart two known soviet victims: U-78 sunk by artillery on Pillau, U-763 scuttled in shipyard after damages made by soviet (ground-based) aircrafts).

I've not much knowledge about it, but i guess that during these last months, u-boats didn't operated for much longer time in the Gulf. And if there was a "Missed one", it should have been reported by the lists of u-boats seized after the war and mostly scuttled by Allied in Ireland or given to other uses.

I've seen the polish blog is linked to a forum, i could try to write there and ask details and if there are future plans for further diving.
Maybe they could discover further clues to identify the wreck.

I don't sure in this before I'll see some fotos with damages of the wreck.

In the text there is the point two that goes on description of the damages on the wreck.
http://forum-nuras.com/printview.php?t= … 67fe2221a2

They mention sonography scope.
Then it follows a specific description of the visual check:

Sadly they've not included photos of the damages listed: but the video they've included show them.
http://vimeo.com/78585591

At minute  5.21 and forward  they had marked the frame with "Impact Place" and there is some kind hole and scattered pieces.

On all the following point of the text they've listed a series of key features that identify the submarine as a late production vessel (1943-forward), as U-367 was, and not an early model.

I will try to ask at the forum staff if there are further photos or details that may give confirmation about mine-damage explosion.

Hello again! First of all sorry that i went away (i had some study).

If it's not bothering, i've a little group of cases that probably has been alread checked and studied, but i've been unable to find confirmations/denials etc.

It's concerning the losses caused by mines laid by Finnish submarines.

It's seems just fair that they're also included among the successes of Finnish subs. as similar victories are given to the ones of other nations.

I've found just this short lists of Finnish claims:

http://kotisivut.fonet.fi/~aromaa/Navyg … /mines.htm

30.6.1941    Submarine chaser MO–143 was lost on emerged mine from barrage F3 laid by Vesihiisi on 22.6.1941.
(i've checked the place: 20 mines laid between Vaindlo e Kalkgrund).

5.7.1941    Latvi an steamer Rasma (3200 tons) was struck by mine at Mohni and had to be beached close to this island. German Schnellboots destroyed the ship later. This F4 barrage was laid by Iku-Turso22.6.
(previously say the field was laid north Mohni island.)

7.7.1941    s/s Everolanda (3379 BRT) was badly damaged in barrage F5 laid by Vetehinen on 22.6. The steamer hit a sweeped mine that had not been detected and destroyed by minesweepers. Simultaneously another mine exploded in gear of minesweeper T-202 Buj. Buj received insignificant damages.
(field laid north of Kunda).

7.8.1941    s/s Aksel Karl (3500 BRT) was lost because it left sweeped waterway through barrage laid by Iku-Turso on 22.6.
(field laid north of Kunda).

11.8.1941    Soviet destroyer Steregustshi and passenger ship Vjatsheslav Molotov were damaged at Ruuskeri and towed to Tallinn. Vjatsheslav Molotov was damaged in barrage laid by Vesihiisi on 24.6. Explosion was a result of attempt to clear paravane from sweeped mine.
(field laid at Ruuskeri).

8/1941    Estonian steamer Marija was damaged in the coastal sea way and had to be beached.
??
(Not details).

MO–143, Rasma, Everolanda, Aksel Karl confirmed. Steregustshi was damaged on the German minefield D.10. Molotov probably damaged by the exposion of a mine, swepped on the soviet minefield "24-A". Marija - no such losses or damages.
