THE CHEMULPHO FIGHT.

SCENE ON THE VARYAG. A LIVING HELL. GHASTLY DETAILS. Press Assariatioa.— Copyright. Loxdox, February 17. The Daily Mail's Seoul correspondent supplies the following, description of the Chemulpo fight. The firing commenced at a range of eight thousand yards, aod was maiuly directed against the Varyag. The Russians manoeuvred rapidly to avoid tho fire, but five shells struck the Varyag in quick succession. One shell killed or -disabled all the men, save one, who were working the forecastle gun. Another struck a portion of a 6-inch gun aft, exploding the ammunition, and producing sheets of flames as high as the fighting top. A third demolished the fore bridge, firing the debris, and causing the crew to take positions at the fire stations. The guns then ceased firing for five minutes. The shrapnell fire from four guns^repoa'edly swept the crew,. and n. shell' penetrated the waterline, of the Varyag. The ship was a living hell, the red hot shells burning the flesh of the victims horribly. The absence of gun shields caused unnecessary loss. The Russiaus were dazed and benumbed but continued to work the guns. A Ruffiian lieutenant says that blood was everywhere, and that severed limbs, torn bodie*, and ripped flesh were scattered about.

THE FIRST FORTNIGHT.

THE FIRST FORTNIGHT.

it is 14 days to-day since the " cannon's opening rear " announced to the world that the long-expected war i,i tho Far East had begun, and it will lc interesting to put together «a couj.ected. form the reliable news that can be extracted from the mass of disjointed, contradictory and confusing telegrima tl<at Uave come from Tc-kio, St. Petersburg, London and New York. At first it Was thought that the first shot was fired at Port Arthur, but subsequently it was os« certained that the Japanese drew FIRST BLOOD AT CHEMULPO, when five cruisers and a number oi torpedo boats opened fire on the Bth on the Russian cruisor Varyag and the gunboat Coreotz. Although the engagement was fought on the Eth. it was not till tho IBth 'that apy description of the fight wns given. On that day the Daily Mail 'a Seoul correspondent gave to the public % most graphic description ol modern warships in action. It recalled accounts of the terrific, though one-sided, fights that marked the Chine-Japanese and tha Spanish-American wars. Tho Japanese squadron opened fire on the Russian vessels at a distance of 4 J miles, and in thia first test proved themselves efficient naval gunners. Their shots at once began to take effect, and as they drew closer and brought the full weight of their batteries to bear, the Varyag. upon which attenl tiou was chiefly centred, become in thY words of the correspondent "c, living hell." The crews of the Varyuf's guna, which were but ill-protected, were struck down almost to a man by the shells that burst around them, and in an incredibly short time the bodies of 3 officers nnd 104 men were strewn about the decks, while the cruiser was a veritable wreck. In this engageoneut, the first of tho war, the Japanese put out of action , the Varyajg.-a cruiser of 6500 tons and 20,« 000 h.p., and the Corcetz. a guaboat Of 12,013 tons and 15,000 h.p., built at Stockholm in IQB7. Although their fir* wns returned, the -Japanese ships canio out of tho encounter without having so much as the strand of a rope severed. On the "same day a powerful Japanese fleet, consisting of th© six battleships given in the above table and 10 armour* ed and protected .cruisers , ATTACKED PORT ARTHUR, and renewed the effort on the 9tb. It is interesting to note that Admiral Togo, wko commanded the Japanese, floet, and s o uarrowiy missed, the honour of firing th* first shot, was tho first officer to strike a blow for Japan in the war with China, He was then in command of the Mantfia, and opened the war by sinking) the. trail-" eport Kowshing. Admiral Togo is Jnaf over 40 years of age, and, like so many of tho Japanese officers, ho was educated" for the high and responsible position ha now holds in tho British training soUege of H.at.S. Worcester. Tho second division was commanded by Admiral Kamimuray who hoisted his flag on the cruiser" Idzumo ; and again it is, to be noted tbat he is indobted to our country for his training in the science of naval warfares The attack was characterised by, bold* ness, promptitude and success. Th'u success of tho Japanese scemes to be, due first t o the suddenness of their movements and second to the accuracy of their information. It seems as if all tho lavish praise that has been bestowed upon the Japanese Intelligence Department Is de^ 6orved, for they clearly knew the exact position of the warships lying} in Port Arthur. It is reported .that a Japanese Admiral entered Port Arthur disguised an a menial, for the purpose ,of making ob» nervations, and, considering tho proved ingenuity and daring of the race, tho story is not above credence. Tho Russians, apparently thinking themselves secure, were keeping a poor look-out and had neglected to put out torpedo nets. Towards midnight on the Bth tho ears ot all were startled .by three muffled explosions, and it was realised that the Jae pa nose fleet was at the mouth of the liar* bour and that the deadly torpedoes wets at work A hot, brief fire followed, and v little* later the two most powerful llustiiun battleships— the Retv'isau and Tsareviu-h—were disabled, and the fast' cruslpr Pnlluda. intended to destroy Jnpaueso commerce, was sunk. Tho Russians deny that th^ I'allada was sunk, but it is qi'ito certain that if she was not sunk, sho wns grounded in shallow water nnd put out of the active list. At daybrcuki on the JHh three Jiipuneso cruisers caino boldly within long-distance range and took observations for two hours. At 11 o'clock; in the morning tho whole fleet; of 16 wtq*

Ships, in two divisions and In superb battle array, appeared on the horizon, and opening fire a quarter of an hour Inter, landod a 12in. shell near the tornado boats grouped around the entrance to tno harbour. For two hours tho bombardment lasted, the action being remarkable for the admirable formation maintained by the Japanese fleet and for the disorder that provailod among tho Russians. Iho Port Arthur engagement! conclusively proved what all naval oxperts long ago pointed out, that the Japanese fleet has on enormous advantage in being homogenous ; i.e., capable of acting in concert by reason of equality in armament and speed. A glance at the list of Japanese battleships shows, that th"ey are all ISknot vessels, and all have a broadsido fire of over 40001 b. The Russian battleships, on the other hand, range in speed from 18 to 19 knots, and In broadsido fire from 26001 bto 35001 b. Consequently the Russians are unablo to oppose tho formidable Japanese squadron by a fleet of anything lik© the same fighting power. About midday the Japanese retired slowly in line, and from subsequent accounts they had every reason, to be satisfied with their work. They themselves had not received a scratch, the Russian shell 9 falling short, while they had inflicted on the Russian fleet damage to the extent of AT LEAST £7,000,000. I The battleships Poltava, Pobieda, Retvisan and Tsarovitch, and the cruisers Askold, Diana, and Novik were put out of action, the last-named being the swiftest vessel in Eastern seas. Subsequent telegrams show that tho battleships Petrcpavlovsk and Sevastopol were also injured, but to what extent has not been accurately ascertained, and of course is not divulged by Admiral Alexieff. On tho 14th the Japaneso torpedo boats, which have been, so conspicuous iv all the engagements, again succeeded in CATCHING THE RUSSIANS NAPPING in Port Arthur, and torpedoed the Boyarln, a protected , cruiser of 3200 tens, capable of doing 22 knots an hour. This addition to the list of Russian casualties enormously weakens her naval strength in the Far East, as a glance at the marked table above will show. Of eight battleships, only two remain uninjured, and of eight protected cruisers, one has bee* < sunk and five disabled. There only remain to Russia two battleships, two protected cruisers and a squadron of armoured cruisers that has not yet been in action. {The position is simply amazing, and even those who expected most for the superiority of the Japanese navy, could hardly have hoped that their success would be so great. THE JAPANESE FLEET, so far from 'being "reduced, has been strengthened by tho additfoa of the Nishni qnjd Kasuga, which arrived from Genoa last week, and which enormously increased the power of an already formidable squadron of armcured cruisers. A glance at the above- tables shows that so far as the sea is concerned the victory is with Japan, for the Japanese navy will most certainly destroy any of the remaining Ilussi an ships that como within its reach. It will be remembered that early in the mouth A REINFORCING SQUADRON from the Mediterranean, left for the Russian harbours in the Far East. It comprised the Oseabiya,- Admiral Verenius's flagship (12,674 tons, 19 knots), with the transport Saratoo and three torpedo destroyers. At; the least the voyage would tafae three weeks, but with Japan now in control of the Yellow Sea and the Strait of Korea, ■ t the position of tho squadron is obviously a hazardous one, and if It' proceeds with tho attempt to reach Port Arthur only a miracle will preserve it from, the clutches of the Japanese. Such are briefly the successes of Japan against the Korean fleet, and in addition' she has mad© several captures of merchantmen of the utmost importance, the latest being that of the Russian East Asiatic Co.'s GOOO-ton steamer Manchurian, laden with munitions' of war. There has also been considerable movement among • .'"'. • •■' THE TROOPS ON LAND, but it seems unlikely that a collision will occur for some i" time yet. .To the land movements, however,- we must return, at another opportunity. The position in brief at the end of the first fcrtnight is that Russia finds herself at a loss to explain her apparent .impotence to the world. Japan has struck blow after IMow with the most telling effect, and Russia has given no 'sign of ability to retaliate. According to Saturday's telegrams, St. Petersburgi officially declares that much ! time isr now- Necessary in order to strike Japan a Wow worthy of Russia's might and dignity, and, it is not surprising to learn I ' that Vienna is: amazed and regards the communique as betraying a state of bewilderment in the Czar's Government. The London Times does. npi^; exaggerate when it says that the communique me.ins that" Russia finds herself under the necessity of postponing indefinitely military operations. She must leave Port Arthur, Vladivostock will fall by starvation or assault, and Russia, falling back, v ill leave behind her all her prestige in ihe Far East, and half her prestige in <he rest of the world beside.
